The Biosphere Reserve Bank for the Global South is an initiative of 1 Earth Holdings Inc., a Canadian biosphere startup based in Toronto, Canada.
Through its operational blueprint and global architecture, the Biosphere Reserve Bank aims to transition the Global South from a peripheral role as a debtor and raw material supplier to a central position as a primary stakeholder and equity holder in global ecological wealth.
Just as the 1944 Bretton Woods Agreement designed an international monetary system to rebuild a war-torn world and prevent economic collapse, this new architecture must re-engineer global finance to avert ecological collapse and fund a rapid, equitable transition to a net-zero, nature-positive planet.
By monetizing preservation rather than extraction, this system aligns the self-interest of global markets with the survival of the species.
The idea of the Biosphere Reserve Bank as an International Bank for Restoration, Regeneration & Reintegration with an Earth first mission was first proposed to Hon. Naseer Ahamed, Minister of Environment of Sri Lanka by the Founder & CEO of 1 Earth Holdings Inc. in a letter dated 19 February, 2023. The President of Sri Lanka H.E. Ranil Wickremsinghe embraced and approved the idea instantly after reading the letter. Following a series of official exchanges, strategy papers, and speech drafts between the Founder and the Ministry of Environment of Sri Lanka over the next six months, the concept was developed into a viable Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) for climate and nature finance for the Global South. From its initial conception to the final adoption at the Colombo Declaration at the UNEP-5 Forum, this game-changing initiative was led by Saiful Amin Bhuiyan, who served as the Honorary Adviser to the Minister of Environment of Sri Lanka. The idea was strongly supported by Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, President of COP28 (Dubai), Special Envoy for Climate Change & Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of UAE, during his blateral meeting with Hon. Naseer Ahamed on the sidelines of The World Sustainable Development Summit 2023 in New Delhi in February 2023.
